The concept for "Growing Season: The Life of a Migrant Community" was born
while photographer Gary Harwood was on assignment for Kent State University
at the Hartville Migrant Community Center, where Kent State nursing and
translation faculty and students, along with other organizations, were
treating and working with the migrant workers and their families. Once
Harwood saw the farm, with its black muck soil, neat rows of crops and
workers shaded under straw hats, he was determined to make this community
his next personal project.
To bring the photos – and book – to life, Harwood partnered with writer
David Hassler, who presents first-person narratives written in the voices
of the migrant workers and the surrounding community who support them. And
now, the book has been given life beyond its pages thanks to educational
programs like One Book, One Community and lesson plans developed by Kent
State University College of Education students.
